Man, Tempest in both iterations are such great games, but that movement variant is just the wrong amount of two-action movement. Ugh.
[...]
And things like Beat Saber and Thumper in VR...
You may want to check out Polybius. I believe it's also available on PC now, so don't necessarily need a PSVR1 setup anymore to play it. It's a pretty wild ride in VR.

Welp, Zero Punctuation is dead.

The Escapist fired their editor-in-chief, so a big portion of the staff (including Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw and the entire video team) resigned as well. The rights to Zero Punctuation are held by Escapist (and it’s ownership group), so, that’s that then. And since video content was the biggest draw to The Escapist? Yeah. I don’t see a reason to frequent their site ever again.

For what it’s worth, Calandra and the folks who left with them are going to try for the independent route… details should come this week.

Personally, I had stopped watching ZP weekly a long time ago, and instead would binge watch them occasionally while doing cardio.

Good luck to the creators, where ever they land.

Hah, they had just gone through the effort of making a premium version of ZP where you could subscribe for a more unfiltered and ad-free version of what they put on YouTube.
I was going to say - I feel bad for whoever was on the team getting all that set up. They only showcased that for the last couple of episodes.

ZP was still going on? I know Yahtzee had flexed some game design muscles but figured he'd moved on a long time ago.
No, he's been doing weekly ZP, plus some "Extra Punctuation," and a new recent Yahtzee Unscripted (which is edited Twitch Stream footage with some, well, scripted-ish text in between).

Like @Diabolical , I also usually save ZP/Yahtzee for binge-watching sessions now and again.

It was always, hey, I wonder what he thought of <x> game. Then it turns into a rabbit hole, like diving into wikipedia or nerdsniping yourself with youtube.

Tempest 2000 was an official sequel. There was also a tempest X3, a tempest 2000 clone for PSX.

Also a sequel tempest 3000 for the forgotten flop the nuon. That made tempest 2000 look mild in comparison.

Also the alternative movement was supposedly in the First test version of tempest but it made so many sick that they went with the claw moving around the field

I don't see it. Tempest in all it's variations is not a rhythm game in any way. They may share some visual aspects , mainly the look of the vector graphics , but that's really the extent of it. I dont think the original tempest even had music

Ahh Geometry Wars. Everyone's favorite part of Project Gotham racing 2 :D

Also again, outside of the visual part, Geometry wars was a twin stick arena shooter, ditto for everyday shooter.

Never played Beat saber, but Thumper is really great. Don;t know how they manage to convey a sense of dread while playing a rhythm game but they do

It's the misc thread, so that's pretty good misc material :D

It's interesting how some of these games came about and how there's certain games that just form complexly new genres because they are so differnt then anything else.
There's tempest 4000 as well. I bought it (Tempest 2000 was one of the very few reasons to own an Atari Jaguar, and I spent many hours playing tempest2k.) but it didn't click for me. The controls feel off on a modern controller.

Did not know that.

It seems like tempest peaked at tempest 2000 and everything lese is a variation on that

Extra Punctuation was even better, IMHO, than ZP. Extra Punctuation took aspects of game theory that informed ZP reviews for fuller exploration, like how traversal methods contribute to fun or romance in games lacks ludonarrative punch.

Beyond ZP and Extra Punctuation, the whole Adventure is Nigh series is/was bloody hilarious. Jack Packard is delightfully demented - some of the stuff he came up with as DM was utterly brilliant and completely out of left field.

I don't even play D&D, but I loved watching all of the campaigns. We might never get a conclusion to The Liar, The Witch and The Wartorn as Escapist probably has the rights to the series. I believe they mentioned in their kickoff livestream that KC and Amy are joining Second Wind as freelancers, and that Jack is going to be involved, too. If Jesse Galena also joins in, then the gang's all there to go start up a new series at some point.

Ok.

1. UE 5 is running great on my system. (11700k, NVMe Gen 4 SSD, 3080, and 32 gig ram.

2. So far the quest structure/world layout kind of reminds me of The Outer Worlds, vs Skyrim.

3. Skill tree has some fun if weird options, like getting a dash ability for RoboCop.

4. They have done a good job of nailing the future 80's Detroit of the first movie.

Warcraft Rumble released over the weekend. It's a Warcraft flavor of Clash Royale if you liked that, with seemingly a lot more options and depth. Early on, it seems F2P gold is pretty generous. Haven't hit where I "need" to spend gold yet, but some of the early package deals seemed good enough to throw some some Play Store credit at.
There's a guild functionality too but I haven't been able to join any to see what it's about. If there are any Arsians playing, I could start a new thread and guild to group up.
It's fun so far, but you can definitely hit a wall in a day or two playing semi-casually.

I see there's an Ars Brute Squad in the list of available guilds. Anyone know who's running it, or how to get an invite?

I haven't seen any other Arsians post about it. I started a guild just to see what it was about. Called WhizzomaticFive (no numbers in the name is lame) if you want to join, but it's just me right now, lol

Has the shooting improved since the demo? There was frustratingly little feedback that you were actually hitting enemies. Armored or not, people don't just stand there taking rounds.
Clearly you've never played against me in a first person shooter.

Especially in Robocop where a single 9mm bullet should rip through a person with the force of a log crashing down on them from 100 stories above.

Unless, of course, you're shooting Robocop himself where a nuke would barely slow him down.

The solidarity shown there has been quite amazing. The entire Escapist video team resigned and are joining the Nick, the fired EIC with their new Independent project, "Second Wind". And clearly Yahtzee must love working with them. He's donated 7k, the same amount that had been fundraised for Adventure is Nigh season 4 toward their eventual D&D project.

Developer of The Anacrusis really laying into how IGN reviews indie games in early access: https://www.tiktok.com/@chetfaliszek/video/7299559404116987178

TL;DW - he doesn't like how early-access indie games are given a review score, which are then never updated or covered again once the game reaches 1.0. Unlike the treatment doled out to AAA games that advertise with IGN

I can't really answer. I never played the demo. I know in the full version people will clutch the stumps where arms used to be, fall over if their legs are shot off (or after a head shot), will hold their junk and keel over after a crotch shot, and will fall down and get back up after an explosion (if the explosion doesn't kill them outright). Some enemies have helmets and chest plates that will absorb multiple shots.

I know there are also some melee options and throwable objects, but I've not used those yet. Mainly the Auto-9 and an AK-47. I'm not very far into the game.

He’s not wrong and that is one of the major reasons I ignore IGN. Even Steam reviews denote early access and asks if you want to change your review after playing the full release.

I should try Anacrusis again. The presentation was at least something different but, ehhhhh…. It was a weaker Left4Dead-like. The shooting felt so lackluster when my buddies and I played last year we never went back to it.

Isn't that pretty much every FPS? The person doing the shooting can take huge amounts of damage while it takes a shot or two to kill off everyone else.

Which is why I wish more games took the Metro series approach where turning up the difficulty makes everyone more deadly and able to die more easily.
